How-to-Stand-Out-in-a-Business-Networking-Event.jpg

If you’re a jobseeker, a startup entrepreneur, or just somebody who wants to expand their network, a business networking event is the venue for you. This type of event opens opportunities for you to meet like-minded individuals who can help you acquire a firm footing in your niche.

However, to make the most of this event, you should first learn how to introduce yourself. While it sounds simple, you might actually be doing it all wrong.

To help you, we’ve compiled a list of things that you need to do to confidently introduce yourself and stand out in a business networking event.

1. Show Enthusiasm

Showing enthusiasm is the first step to a great introduction. Smile and offer them your undivided attention. Give them the respect you would like to receive and don’t look away or act distracted, otherwise, you’ll look uninterested.

2. Be Mindful of Your Gestures

Similar to smiling, an open posture conveys openness and approachability. Keep your head up, relax your shoulders, and straighten your body to signal your confidence and make others feel more comfortable talking with. Maintain eye contact to create a better connection and nod once in a while to show that you are listening.

3. Find a Common Ground

Building rapport is about finding things in common. Start by finding out as much as you can about the person you are addressing. Point out similarities like shared traits, interest, experiences, beliefs, or opinions. Once you know what you have in common, talk in a way that will make your listener feel that you understand him or her. This way, you are likely to increase your social compatibility.

4. Listen

Instead of talking about yourself, pay attention to the person you are talking with and listen. Don’t interrupt in the middle of a point and don’t try to change the subject even if it makes you feel uncomfortable. Remember what you have been told and read between the lines. This way, it will be easier for you to identify what words are best to use or to avoid.

5. Observe Proper Etiquette

Appropriate business etiquette is expected of everyone. Never dismiss anyone as unimportant. Show interest to anyone regardless of their position. Likewise, don’t struggle to meet as many people as possible in a room. Instead, focus on creating solid connections with a few significant people.
