With December close-at-hand, there is no better place to celebrate Christmas than in the Philippines. To say that Christmas is a much awaited season here is an understatement. No one takes it as seriously as Filipinos – Christmas lights and tunes appear as early as September. It’s no surprise to find out that the seasonal events and shows never fail to amaze year after year. Here’s a list of four quintessential Christmas events that no Filipino should miss:
1. UP Lantern Parade
A tradition dating back to 1922, the annual UP Lantern Christmas Parade is a wonderful exhibition of themed floats that are paraded across campus grounds. Every year, thousands of visitors marvel at the creativity of UP students, alumni, and faculty members, who create amazing lanterns that might as well be mobile art installations, from colossal Mecha-inspired robots to fascinating tableaus of classic Filipino fables. Set up a picnic blanket along the UP oval and relax as these mesmerizing creations evoke awe, laughter, and maybe even bewilderment as they pass by. Be sure not to miss this one-of-a-kind experience this December 16 at the UP Campus grounds.
2. World Bazaar Festival
The World Bazaar Festival, the mother of all bazaars, has become a staple shopping destination during the holiday season for those who want the complete package. This grand Christmas fair has everything – rare finds, delectable food, and even celebrity appearances. You can get your much needed Yuletide retail therapy with around 600 exhibiting companies and 700 booths. Be part of this epic exposition this December 3 – 23 at the World Trade Center, Pasay City.
3. Christmas On Display
Christmas On Display (also known as the COD show) is an alluring animated mannequin show that takes on a unique Christmas theme every year. A Christmas tradition that started in 1957 in a department store along Avenida, it is now located at the Greenhills Shopping Center. And since then has become a regular attraction for Filipino families during this time of the year. Conveniently, you can enjoy this show after shopping at arguably the most popular shopping destination in Metro Manila.
4. Ayala Triangle Lights & Sounds Show
Visit the Ayala Triangle Lights & Sounds Show in Makati and immerse yourself in a spectacle of dazzling lights beautifully choreographed to lively music. This luminous display is situated at the heart of the Central Business District, surrounded by Makati’s charming Christmas decorations and bright office buildings. You can witness this mesmerizing play of lights at the Ayala Triangle from early November this year to early January next year.
Filipinos always find ways to express their Christmas spirit and, through these Christmas events, we show the meaning of the season and the importance of family and friends – whether through buying joyful gifts at the bazaar for the kids or taking that special someone to a romantic display of colorful lights. It’s definitely safe to say that we Filipinos know how to celebrate Christmas.
